Coimbatore : Citing losses due to the recent flooding in Bhavani river, the farmers into banana cultivation in Mettupalayam region have demanded fair compensation from the State government.
The widespread torrential rains in the Nilgiris and Pillur catchment areas caused continuous flooding in the Bhavani river over the past month.
Owing to which the Bhavani Sagar dam is brimming with water and reached its full reservoir capacity of 97 feet. The excess water released from the dam has caused serious devastation to the farmlands along the banks of the river. Among the villages, Sirumugai, Lingapuram, Kandhavayal, Kothaamandi are the worst affected.
It is estimated that around three lakh plantain crops cultivated in the aforesaid villages are on the verge of complete destruction.
"If the waters do not recede soon, all the crops will decay resulting in huge losses", the farmers opine.
The continuous flooding has questioned the livelihood of the farmers whose income depend on plantain cultivation. The farmers have jointly urged the State government to access the situation and approve fair compensation.
They also noted with most farmers already in debt, such losses and delayed compensation will wreak havoc in their lives.
