Coimbatore : Demanding to allot alternative sites within the city limits, the residents who have been served evacuation notices by TN Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) staged a sit-in dharna in the District Collectorate today.
Residents living in Muthannan Kulam, Ganapathy, Indra Nagar, V.O.C Nagar, Kasi Kavundan Pudur, Kumarasamy Colony and other areas have been directed to move to TNSCB housing complexes located in the the outskirts of the city.
While many have shifted to the allotted housing units, few of them chose to reside in the same area citing children's education and jobs. As they have been living over two decades in the encroached lands, they have been persistently demanding to allot housing sites within the city limits.
Meanwhile, more than 100 such residents thronged the District Collector and staged a dharna. They urged the Government to utilize Panchami lands and other poromboke government lands to house them, instead of allocating houses out of the city.
MP P.R Natarajan who stood in support of them urged the Revenue Department Officials and Slum Clearance Board Officials to look into their demands.
Later speaking to the media he said that “As these people are living for years in the city limits, they should not be evacuated all of a sudden. The authorities could provide housing within the city limits."
“A decision would be arrived at after consultations with the District Collector K. Rajamani after he gets back from Chennai” the MP said.
