Athipookolam, Onam Sadya mark Onam Celebrations in the district

The city wore a festive colourful look as the Keralite community celebrated Onam with colorful Pookolams adorning the courtyards of homes across many areas in the city. The 10-day harvest festival is celebrated by the Keralite community during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August - September), every year.

The 10-day harvest festival is celebrated by the Keralite community during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August - September), every year.



The festival is celebrated to honour the homecoming of a mythical-demon king by the name of Mahabali. Welcoming the arrival of the legendary King Mahabali to their homes, every traditional Malayali household in the city decorate their homes with eye-catching kolams (floral carpets) and prepare the traditional elaborate feast Onam Sadya to share with friends and family. The grand lunch consists of a variety of local dishes served on banana leaves with more than 4-5 payasams (desserts). 



Men and women clad in the traditional 'Mundu' exchanged Onam greetings with one another and visited the Siddhapudur Ayyappan temple int he city seeking prosperity and well-being. Special poojas were arranged for Onam celebrations. 

Similar celebrations were observed in the Nilgiris district too. Pookolams at public places including the Coonoor railway station and the Army Cantonment area marked Onam celebrations in the district. Tourists were seen taking selfies along the colourful flower carpets (Pookolams).
