Over 200 residents lay siege to Ooty municipality's Solid Waste Management Centre

The Nilgiris: Over 200 people in Ooty protested against the functioning of solid waste management centre operated by the Nilgiris Municipality and alleged that the bad odour emanating from the centre has been causing illness amongst the public in the area.


The Nilgiris: Over 200 people in Ooty protested against the functioning of solid waste management centre operated by the Nilgiris Municipality and alleged that the bad odour emanating from the centre has been causing illness amongst the public in the area.



Recently, the Ooty municipality has been collecting wastes from in and around the region and transporting them to the solid waste management centre at Kanthal in Ooty. 

The two solid waste management centres functioning in Kanthal segregates waste collected from the various regions by the Municipality, on a daily basis. Later, the composts created from the solid waste management centres are distributed to the farmers in Ooty. 



In this scenario, the people residing near the solid waste management centre has alleged that the bad odour emanating from the centre has been causing uneasiness in the neighbourhood. The residents also complained of health hazards and presence of flies and insects.

The residents recalled that the municipality had earlier promised that the solid waste management will not produce bad odour or health hazards to the public but however its the other way. 

The officials finally arrived to the spot and promised the people to address the issue.
