Coimbatore: Over 50 members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK), Viduthalai Siruthaigal, Dravidar Tamilar Katchi and other parties protested in front of Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand on Tuesday to show their disapproval on Kerala government for not allowing to store water in the Siruvani dam to its full capacity.

The protestors blocked the Kerala State regional transport buses (KSRTC) and alleged that the move by the Kerala government will cause water shortage in summer season.

"Citing reservoir stability, the Kerala government has been releasing water from the dam. Despite incessant rainfall in the catchment areas of Siruvani, water level in the reservoir had not crossed 43 ft against it's full capacity of 49 feet", noted K. Ramakrishnan, General Secretary of TPDK.

"Instead of storing the rainwater, the Kerala government has been releasing it into the river. This move has several implications on water distribution system including acute water shortage", he added.

Police were deployed for security in both the entrances of the Thiruvalluvar bus stand.

As the police stopped the protesters from entering the bus stand they took to the roads and raised slogans against the Kerala government.

All the protesters courted arrest, as they tried to lay siege to KSRTC buses.
