All dams brimming with water in the Nilgiris

The Nilgiris: All major dams in the Nilgiris district are brimming with water, owing to torrential rains in the Western Ghats for the past two weeks. Surplus water from 12 dams, which are regarded to be the major source of power generation and water distribution in the Nilgiris are being used for additional power generation.

The Nilgiris: All major dams in the Nilgiris district are brimming with water, owing to torrential rains in the Western Ghats for the past two weeks. Surplus water from 12 dams, which are regarded to be the major source of power generation and water distribution in the Nilgiris are being used for additional power generation. 



More than 845 MW of electricity is being generated from Mukurthi, Upper Bhavani, Porthimandu, Parsons valley, Avalanche, Emerald, Pykara and Pillur. The water ifrom these dams are a major source for power generation for the 12 power stations operating in Kundah and Singara hydroelectric projects in the Nilgiris district.

Of these, the Upper Bhavani dam is considered very important as water stored in this dam is operated by five hydroelectric stations - Avalanche, Kundah, Kethai, Barli and Pillur.



The total reservoir capacity of Mukurthi dam is 111 ft, Pykara - 183 ft, Glenmorgam - 148 ft, Sandynalla - 118 ft, Parsons valley -141 ft, Porthimandu -185 ft, Upper Bhavani -266 ft, Emerald - 212 ft, Avalanche - 186 ft, Kundah - 105 ft, Pillur - 288 ft and Kethai - 156 ft.

All the above-mentioned dams have reached its full capacity and surplus water is being discharged. The farmers relying on Bhavani river at the foothills of the blue mountains are over-joyed die to the steady release of water for irrigation.
