Coimbatore : As many as 29 protected species of Parakeets that were traded illegally were rescued by forest personnel along with the members of Animal Rescuers in Singanallur, here today.
Coimbatore : As many as 29 protected species of Parakeets that were traded illegally were rescued by forest personnel along with the members of Animal Rescuers in Singanallur, here today.
According to sources, all birds that were rescued today belong to Rose-ringed Parakeet species, one of the regular victims of illegal wildlife trade in the country.
Out of the rescued birds, 21 were females and six were males and two were chicks.
“The birds were spotted on Vellalore to Singanallur Road by members of our organisation, Chithran and Krishna. Four men were selling the birds publicly”, said Vinny R. Peter from Animal Rescuers Organisation.
She further added that the primary flight feathers were plucked from all the Parakeets. And, their beaks were clipped and tail feathers also cut.
“Despite being protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Parakeets are among the most commonly and cruelly caged wild bird species across the country. In most cases, the wing bones of the birds are broken leaving them crippled for life” said a statement from Animal Rescuers.
The members have recorded four species of Parakeets in wildlife trade in Coimbatore including Malabar Parakeet, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Alexandrine Parakeet and Vernal Hanging Parrot.
“Lack of awareness is the major reason for the brutality imposed on these birds,” said a member of the organisation adding that they were working for Parakeet welfare along with fortune tellers in Coimbatore.
The rescued birds will be handed over and taken care by Parakeet Transit Aviary of Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Coimbatore Division.
Meanwhile, the organisation has requested the public to register complaints about cruelty unleashed on Parakeets by contacting the following rescue numbers: +91 96 26 011 011 or CBE DFO Office - +91 422 2456911
