Tirupur: Tamil Nadu Farmers Association and various other farmer's association have submitted a petition against Bharat Petroleum for laying pipelines from Coimbatore to Bangalore through farm lands.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to lay and manage the pipeline project to carry 3.52 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) from Irugur (Coimbatore) to Devangonthi (Karnataka). The pipelines will pass through farmlands in Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

According to the farmers, last April, the centre had approved a plan to lay oil pipelines from Coimbatore to Bangalore. Recently, the land survey of the project was completed and several acres of farm lands in districts including Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur were annexed in the oil pipeline project.

"As acres of farm land in Tirupur is included in the project, the farmers associations have submitted a petition to the Tirupur District Administration to divert the pipelines through roads and safeguard the livelihood of the farmers", the petition stated.
