"The vultures are helping the environment by acting as scavengers as they eat the carcass of dead animals. The vultures which were once found in thousands in the pristine forests have been reduced to mere hundreds in numbers" Vulture Conservation Association Secretary Bharathidasan said.
He also added that "The decrease in the number of this species is due to harmful diclofenac medicine given to the cattle which in turn resulted in the death of vultures eating the dead animal treated with the drug”.
He said there is a considerable number of vultures only in the Masinagudi, Moyar regions, and appealed to the Central government to protect the species and help increase the number of vultures in the forests with the help of the Forest department personnel.
