The Nilgiris : Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya said that the Coonoor river waters would be treated and made fit for human consumption at an outlay of Rs 5 crores the funds for which would be sought from the Government.

Taking part in an event organised by “Clean Coonoor” campaign she said that the Nilgiris district has witnessed massive pollution levels of rivers due to the callous disposal of meat wastes and other wastes.

This has rendered the river water unfit for human consumption in the downstream where it merges with Bhavani River. People living in plains use this water for drinking and other purposes on a large scale.

Considering these facts, a river clean up campaign was spearheaded by “Clean Coonoor” and the floating debris and sediments were removed using poclain machinery.

To discourage the disposal of wastes into the river, a barbed wire fence worth Rs 7 lakhs ( 7 to 9 feet height ) and 398-metre length from Mount road to V.P Street was laid by "Isprava Homes ", a Mumbai based company.

District Collector Innocent Divya, the president of 'Clean Coonoor' and 'Isprava Homes' Darshana, Managing Director of Godrej Nadir Godrej, Coonoor MLA Shanthi Ramu, Members of the "Chutrusoolal Arvalargal trust, Municipal officials and the members of the public took part in the event.
