Coimbatore: The Forest Department has announced that the Baralikaadu Eco Tourism which was scheduled to be held over this weekend stands cancelled due to the overflowing Pillur Dam.
Eco Tourism has been established in the region on behalf of the Forest Department at Baralikaadu which is situated in the middle of the Western Ghats near Karamadai, closer to Mettupalayam. The Baralikaadu Eco Tourism is a one-day trip amidst nature which includes a forest-friendly Eco tour guided by the Forest Department and tribals of the region.
It includes trekking in the forest and enjoying the beauty of nature, savouring the food prepared by tribals, herbal baths and so on which has of late attracted tourists from across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
With the southwest monsoon rains filling the Pillur Dam to the brim for the third time yesterday, keeping in mind the safety of the Dam, an additional 10,000 cubic feet of surplus water was pumped out of the river into the Bhavani river. The water inflow to the river was also 10,000 cubic feet.
As the flow of water in the reservoir of the Dam had increased, boats cannot be used. Moreover, the Boat House in Baralikaadu has been submerged. It is to be noted that the water flow in Pillur Dam has been continually increasing in the past month. The Forest Department had resumed the reservation for Eco Tourism three days ago, to recommence from this weekend. But considering the safety of tourists, the Eco Tourism has been cancelled causing much disappointment among tourists.
