Coimbatore : Volunteers of the Siruvani Vizhudhugal along with various government departments have been working relentlessly since Wednesday noon to clear debris and other waste after around 200 Ganesh idols were immersed in an artificial pond made adjacent to Chinnar in Sadivayal here.

More than 50 members of the organisation worked late into the night upto 1.30 am and were stopped after heavy rains that continued throughout the night.
“The flow of the river was very fast and it was difficult for us to work. We were able to clean only half of the debris because of the rain and heavy flow,” said a member of Siruvani Vizhudhugal.
According to sources, most of the Ganesh idols were made of plaster of Paris mixed with paper pulp and only a few were organic idols.
“The river runs for 10 kms inside reserve forest before entering the mainstream Noyyal in mainland. Hence, it is important that the river is clean,” informed a member.
Meanwhile, activists people have raised a plea to shift the immersion sight near Mathvarayapuram at Kooduthurai in view of the safety and well being of wild animals.
