The Nilgiris: The Pykara Dam has reached its maximum capacity for the second time this season owing to the incessant rains that have lashed Nilgirs district. 1773 cubic feet of water is being released every second.

The district administration has urged people living on the banks to move to safer areas.

Though the onset of monsoons was delayed in Nilgiris, the monsoon has now accounted for 47 percent rainfall in the region. This has led to water levels rapidly rising in dams which are used for drinking water and electricity purposes. The Pykara Dam which had a water level of 43 ft before the rains, rose to 97 ft last month owing to the continuous rainfall.

For the safety of the dam, 27,000 cubic feet of water was released. Torrential rains for the past three days in Nilgiris have further led to the dam reaching its maximum capacity once again. Hence the district administration has decided to release 1773 cubic feet of water every second to ensure the safety of the dam. People in areas like Mayaar, Masinagudi and Tengumarahada have been advised by the district administration to move to safer places.
