Going one step ahead, the irate residents of Karumbukadai have come up with a novel idea - 'Photo Protest' to drive home to the district administration the dismal conditions in which they have had to live for years.
The battered road stretches continue to be a bane to the residents, as the thoroughfares present a picture of dismal neglect. Hence, the residents are indulging in a 'Photo Protest’ by which netizens residing in the area are being asked to upload photos of the damaged stretches, until authorities take heed and re-lay the roads.
Speaking on the issue and their novel idea to raise the civic issues left unattended in their area, Abdul Hakim, a functionary of Jamaat-e- Islami Hind and a resident of Karumbukadai said "For years, Karumbukadai continues to be a much-neglected area. Lacking in all civic amenities, especially the roads which are in a very bad condition, pose serious risk to pedestrians and motorists. The punctured roads have not been re-laid in the many years."
“Indeed, the roads were last laid before the last local body polls, a good many years back,” he alleged.
Sabeer Ahmed, Member, Advisory Council of Student Islamic Organization of India who has been spearheading the social media campaign, represented by its 'Happy Theatre' wing insists, “All the three major thoroughfares including Saramedu road, Fathima Nagar road and Pullukadu road are in such a bad condition and re-laying them has been long overdue. As these roads bear the brunt of the traffic of upto 25,000 vehicles passing on these stretches every day, due to the ongoing construction of the Ukkadam flyover, the residents undergo far too hardship.”
"We hope that the apathetic City Corporation will come to our rescue and re-lay the roads at the earliest, at least after the 'Photo Protest' that we are launching through social media", he added.
The 'Happy Theatre' team which is organizing the Photo Protest has not only asked the residents to post photos of damaged road stretches and potholes but also announced prizes of T-shirts for best entries.
