Coimbatore : One more step in the direction of Coimbatore Corporation’s decision to make Bulk waste generators handle their own waste, CCMC has instructed Hotels and Restaurants to keep three types of garbage bins- one each for vegetable waste, food waste and dry waste.
Coimbatore Corporation had earlier planned not to handle waste from Bulk waste generators starting August 1, 2019. A conclave was planned to educate and guide Bulk waste generators including hotels, restaurants and residential apartments , during the month of July. But due to various reasons the conclave could not be conducted.
Solid waste management rules of 2016 state that bulk waste generators have to segregate waste into three types and should be able to manage their waste themselves. Moreover National Green Tribunal had instructed CCMC to reduce dumping of waste at Vellalore. To achieve this, 69 Micro composting centres in different wards and onsite composting centres at Corporation parks have been planned and work is going on.
In a move to achieve this, CCMC has now instructed hotels and restaurants to keep three bins since The Hoteliers association had requested Corporation for more time to set up their own facilities.
Speaking on this CCMC commissioner J. Sravan kumar said, “Implementing SWM rules has become mandatory across the country. Bulk waste generators alone are generating about 100 tonnes of waste of the total 950 tonnes that the city generates everyday. In order to reduce dumping at Vellalore, CCMC has planned certain measures. Since Bulk waste generators have requested for time to set up their own facilities to manage waste, we have instructed the hotels and restaurants who are about 450 in number, to keep three separate bins for vegetable, food and dry waste”.
“As far as residential apartments are concerned , CCMC has been talking with associations to help them create their own facility within their premises, which will happen shortly” added Sravan Kumar.
