Coimbatore: Leopard sightings have become common of late in Kemmarapalayam, Panapalayamputhur, Kandiyur and Velliyangadu regions near Karamadai, causing panic among residents. The villages at the foothills of Western Ghats rear cattle for their livelihood and it is reported that leopards have been hunting down these cattle often, in the region.

The villages at the foothills of Western Ghats rear cattle for their livelihood and it is reported that leopards have been hunting down these cattle often, in the region.
Last year, a leopard hunted down cattle in Medoor, Panapalayam and Velliyangadu. Following this, the forest officials set up a cage to capture the leopard, but the leopard reportedly escaped from the cage but there had been no leopard movement thereon.
Recently, Sardar Basha who rears cattle at Panapalayam Pudur village heard his dogs barking near the cattle-shed and rushed to inspect his shed. To his shock, he found his dogs chasing a leopard that had attacked all his goats leaving them dead. He immediately informed the Karamadai forest officials who reached the spot to investigate. Farmers in the region requested the forest officials to capture the leopard as soon as possible, before any human casualty could occur.
