Brimming Siruvani reservoir augurs well for Coimbatore

Coimbatore: With monsoon rains feeding the catchment area of the Siruvani Reservoir, the water storage facility located inside the thick reserve forest in Palakkad District is nearing full capacity.

As of today, the level of water at the reservoir that feeds Coimbatore was at 876.36m above sea level, which would be about 42.51 feet. The total depth of the reservoir is 49.53 ft (878.50 m). The catchment area has also received 280 mm rainfall while the adivaram area has received 23 mm.

If the rains are to continue unabated for another week, the dam is expected to overflow within a week’s time, as the inlets are already flooding with water. All the three valves that are used to draw water from the reservoir are totally submerged in water and over 60 mld water is being drawn from the reservoir for Coimbatore.

Meanwhile, more than three landslides have occurred on the road leading to the Siruvani Reservoir making it difficult for officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) to reach the area through Sadivayal. Officials visit the water drawing area regularly to check water levels and also for maintenance purposes. Since the roads have been completely washed away, it could take longer to access the reservoir via road. Work to clear the debris will begin after the rains cease in the area.

Work is also on at Kovai Kuttralam to cover deep pits in the pool area. According to foresters, more than 6 ft deep pits have been identified in the pool that have been caused by the water current. The level of water is also high and fast which could pose a danger for tourists. The facility is expected to open once water levels reduce.
