Driving a car without helmet attracts fine for Tirupur resident

Tirupur: In a bizarre law enforcement incident, a resident from Tirupur received an SMS message from the Tamil Nadu Transport Police Corporation while driving his car, that he had been levied a fine of Rs.100 for not wearing a helmet.

Selvakumar, a resident of NRK Puram in Tirupur had gone to Pollachi on Sunday morning and was returning from Palladam via Pongalur on the Dharapuram road to Tirupur. Around 1.30 pm, he had received an SMS regarding the fine imposed on him. The SMS stated that he was fined Rs.100 for not wearing a helmet while travelling in vehicle with number TN 39 CB 5464, which was his car. On clicking the link regarding the fine, he read that he had been fined for not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler.

When queried about the bizarre incident, Uma, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tirupur District said, "The new ANPR cameras introduced by the traffic police can register the vehicle number automatically. But those cameras have not been installed in Tirupur yet, and so it is still confusing as to how this mistake had taken place. A motorist is subjected to pay fine only when the police stop a vehicle for fine. Otherwise, we issue challan. It is customary that the police and concerned persons get an SMS to pay at the nearest SBI. Therefore, if anyone receives an SMS, they need to pay the fine only after having thoroughly enquired at the police station limits. Else, they need not pay," clarified the Asst. Commissioner and assured that she would further investigate the matter.
