Coimbatore : Following the guidelines by the Government on Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT), that grows fast in a short span, the State Government has also devised its own set of guidelines and has formed a team to monitor the growth of GIFT in 68 fish breeding aquaculture farms, hatcheries and ponds across the State.

Due to the unique characteristics of genetically improved farmed Tilapia including high biodiversity, immunity and huge growth markers in the short term, which is followed by high returns, fish breeders prefer to breed such Tilapia.

To meet the demand of fish nurseries, 67 Tilapia fish breeding hatcheries have been established in Krishnagiri Fisheries farm. Since 2015, Tilapia fishes are sold to the Tamil Nadu and other states.

Production and sale of small fishes take place in the 87 private tilapia farms that own a license from the State government.

"People who set up Tilapia fish farm in land less than one acre or more can do so only after the review of the the district-level review committee and state-level recommendation Committe", said a release from the District Collectorate.

The release noted that the farmers engaged in Tilapia aquaculture should be a member of the District Fisheries Development Agency.
