Coimbatore: The Ganesh Chaturthi festival celebrations have kick-started in Mettupalayam, where 550 Ganesh idols have been sanctified in various parts of the town and its periphery.

Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated with religious fervour in the town where the Hindu outfits including Hindu Munnani have sanctified many idols in places like Sirumugai, Karamadai, and Perianaickenpalayam.

About 550 Ganesh idols have been sanctified and worshiped today at these places including Perianaickenpalayam Utkottam. The clay idols ranged from 3 to 11 feet and come in the many shapes of Panchamukha Ganesha, Anumantha Ganesha, Music Ganesha to name a few.
Early morning Yagnas were conducted for Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha's favourite savouries like Modak (Kolakattai in Tamil), Poha (Aval in Tamil) is offered to the God
Special worships were held in Lord Ganesh temples where devotees waited for a long time to offer worship to the elephant- headed God. The main part of the festival is Ganapathi Visarjana, wherein the sanctified idols get immersed. The event is likely to be held the day after tomorrow.
