The Nilgiris: District Collector, J. Innocent Divya inaugrated 68 water ATMs on State and National highways in the Nilgiris. Following the ban of plastic water bottles and PET beverage bottles from September 1, the district administration has launched Water ATMs for the use of public and tourists.

Necessary arrangements are made at all check posts to educate the tourist about the plastic ban. The ban comes after the order of Madras High directing the district administration to ban sale of plastic water bottles, soft drinks in PET bottles and food items packed in plastic covers.

In a bid to ensure 100% implementation of the ban, the district administration has instructed the personnel at the check posts located at the entry points of the Nilgiris such as Barliar, Kunjappanai, Nadugani, Pattavayal, Geddhai and other points to advise the tourists appropriately.

Shops, hotels and restaurants located on the highways from the check posts to Ooty are advised to refrain from selling banned plastic bottles from September 1.

In a measure to help the tourist access to clean drinking water, several water ATMs are being installed at many public places. Inaugurating one such Water ATM at Botanical garden on Sunday, District Collector, J. Innocent Divya said, "I request the public to lend their fullest co-operation in implementing the plastic ban and conserve the environment."

The water ATMs are designed to dispense one liter of water for Rs.5 and 400ml of water for Rs.2.
