'Society for Smart E- mobility', (SSEM) a platform aimed at bringing together industries, start up entrepreneurs and end users in the Smart mobility domain was launched at Hotel Residency today.
Inagurating the event, J.Radhakrishnan said "Tamil Nadu will release a electric vehicle policy shortly within 15 to 20 days, which will have a framework for various stakeholders in the e-mobility sector to carry it forward”.
"With increasing concern over air pollution due to fast increasing numbers of vehicles, e-mobility is the way forward. With an objective of establishing a platform to connect all stakeholders in the smart e-mobility domain SSEM has been launched", he said
Speaking at the event , K. Ramasamy, Chairman, Roots Group of Companies, said “Coimbatore with its entrepreneurial potential will become the hub for e- vehicles in the country. With its innovative skills and entrepreneurial ability, Coimbatore can create an eco system for e-mobility."
"As this city has a notable number of small and medium units engaged in manufacturing automobile accessories, SSEM will provide a big opportunity for them. This hub in Coimbatore can develop products which can cater globally not just India. By doing so, Coimbatore will become the Detroit of e- vehicles in the future. And, this society is the right platform where in members of academia, Industry and students can all come together in one single platform to reach that goal” he noted
Shankar Vanavarayar, Chairman, Kumaraguru Institutions envisioned a plan for Coimbatore 2.O and exhorted the industry sector to raise up to the cause.
"Coimbatore as a city developed gradually. First Siruvani was brought, then came Pykara and then Cotton industry came up which transformed the city into a textile hub. There is a urgent need for the next dimension in development with smart mobility solutions. Coimbatore though it lost in the race in electronic revolution which Bangalore capitalised, we should catch up on e-mobility and it is the responsibility of every stake holder to work towards it”, opined Shankar Vanavarayar.
J. Radhakrishnan also spoke about the governments initiatives in promoting e- mobility. "Tamil Nadu government is coming up the e-vehicle policy shortly. This policy will cover all aspects including challenges faced in the industry including infra structure requirements like charging stations. The industry has given recommendations, most of which has already been addressed in the policy."
"Coimbatoreans have always been innovators or at the best early adopters. This western belt has a capacity and entrepreneurial character which cannot be found in the other parts of the State. This first of its kind society is an example and e-mobility is the key towards sustainable future. There may be lot of questions and doubts regarding this sector but the Government has taken maximum possible efforts to address the issues", he added.
"By 2030, we as a country should be able to bring in 30 to 35 % of e-vehicles which is now at 5% of the total vehicle count in the country“, said the Principal Secretary.
Elaborating on the industrial schemes and policies for EV manufacturing sector, T. Rajesh, Additional Commissioner of Industries and Commerce stated "Around 200 million vehicles are plying on Indian roads and it will increase to 600 million vehicles by 2030. Pollution levels, scarcity of energy sources and cost to the exchequer would be extremely high at this rate. Hence, e-mobility is the solution to this problem. The country is spending 550 billion on imports of crude oil and 40% of the total crude oil import is for transport industry which can be cut down to a considerable amount using e-mobility solutions.”
"E-mobility, eco system can be created to help the entrepreneurs in this sector which has the potential for 2 lakh crore investments. This society has created a platform for all stake holders which could make Coimbatore, a hub for e- vehicles", Rajesh added.
Hemalatha Annamalai, Founder of Ampere vehicles talked about the challenges in the industry and shared her experience in the e-vehicle industry.
Gaur Dattatreya, Senior Vice president & Head- Mobility solutions , Robert Bosch presented a Global road map for future mobility. V.A Rajendran , Regional Marketing Head, Coimbatore, TN Investment Corporation Ltd spoke about the Financing opportunities for emerging technologies.
