According to Suresh, Range Officer of Coimbatore Range, the elephant failed to respond to treatment and succumbed around 5.30 pm on Friday.
"The elephant was spotted sick by the locals who alerted the forest department. The veterinary team along with officials from forest department reached the spot and began administering treatment. We tried our best for more than eight hours, but unfortunately we could not revive the elephant," Suresh said.
Treatment was headed by Dr. K.P. Prabhu, Veterinary Officer with the Animal Husbandry Department, Coimbatore.
The animal was initially accompanied by a calf which was chased inside the reserve for safer approach.to treat the animal. The ailing elephant was provided with jaggery, banana, calcium foods and water during the treatment. However, she succumbed.
Notably, this is fourth elephant death in Coimbatore in the last one year with three elephants dying in Coimbatore Range alone near the Thadagam Valley.
