Heavy vehicles may find exclusive bays at Vellalore

Coimbatore : An exclusive heavy vehicle terminal is likely to spring up at Vellalore where the Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) project is proposed to be constructed.

While the entry for bus terminals are planned from Chettipalayam main road in Vellalore, the lorry terminal would have its entry facing the Cochin bypass road. Both the lorry and bus terminals are two separate projects but will function on the same premises.

Once the lorry terminal project is completed, the heavy vehicles that grapple in limited space at the bay in Ukkadam are expected to have a comfortable space in Vellalore. But given the Ukkadam flyover work that is underway, traffic congestion in the area is not expected to reduce much by shifting the heavy vehicle bay.

According to a few lorry owners, it is said that the lorries are not in any way causing traffic congestion majorly, since the lorries are allowed inside the city only during specific times. “If the lorry terminus is moved to Vellalore, it will be a problem because the police tend to stop lorries irrespective of what time they come in. Also the 'Lorry Pettai' as it is known has a separate business economy going on inside. The Lorry Pettai has workshops, spare parts stores, transport offices and even finances. Now everything has to be shifted to Vellalore if the project is implemented. This would be a problem considering the distance, since lorries will have trouble coming into the city to pick up load inside the city," opined a lorry owner.

Meanwhile, the city corporation is planning on funds for the IBT estimated at Rs.178.88 crores.

Once the State Government releases the GO in this regard, the proportion of funding for the bus terminal will be known and the work is expected to commence.
