Coimbatore : Forest personnel along with a veterinary team are currently treating a sick wild elephant that collapsed on revenue land at Mankarai here today.
The female elephant aged around 20 was moving along with a herd in the area. Unable to walk further, she had reportedly lied down near a private horticulture farm around 9.00 am.
Local people who spotted the animal informed foresters who arrived at the spot. However, they could not approach the animal as a three year old calf was standing nearby.
After an hour of struggle, the calf was chased into the reserve forest nearby.
“The animal seems to have dehydrated and we have been trying to revive her by giving calcium, water, banana and jaggery,” said Dr. K.P. Prabhu, Veterinary Doctor working with the Animal Husbandry Department, Vadavalli.
Foresters are also having a careful eye on the calf, which is lurking nearby.
