Coimbatore: The city police arrested 18 people for setting up a cottage and staging a Panchami land recovery protest in the city.
The Panchami land recovery protests have been on the rise in the past few years, in Coimbatore. It is alleged that some belonging to the scheduled caste have suddenly set up a cottage in these lands and continue to live there. A few organisations have also begun leading these protests.
Meanwhile, a Panchami land recovery protest was staged all of last night, on behalf of the Samuga Needhi Katchi in Sidhanaickenpalayam, Sulur taluk. The President of the Samuga Needhi Katchi Paneerselvam led the protest with over 200 people participating.
The owner of the land, Balakrishnan, complained to the Sultanpettai police station. The police rushed the spot and initiated peace talks with the protesters. But since the discussions were of no avail, the police arrested Samuga Needhi Katchi President Paneerselvam, General Secretary Nagarajan and 19 others, and booked them under IPC 447, 506 (2) and CLA 7 (1)(a).
Out of the 19 arrested, one of them has been admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital due to high blood pressure and is presently being treated there. The other 18 were handed over to the police in front of Justice Vediyappan at the Justice Quarters, near Puliakulam. Justice Vediyappan ordered for them to be remanded in court custody, until September 12.
