Danish, a resident of Puliyakulam in Coimbatore, was brought to the district court under heavy security cover. He is accused of crossing over from Kerala in 2016 and meeting with the residents of the village in Nilgiris, where the Maoists allegedly put up posters asking people to rise up against the Government. Following the incident, the Kolakombai police registered a case and began an investigation.
On Thursday, the Nilgiris district police sought custody of Danish to question him. Police sources said that after his arrest, Danish had confessed to the Kerala police about his involvement with the group that visited Nedugal Combai in the Nilgiris. Though the police sought a three-day custody, the District Judge P Vadamalai granted the police one-day custody of Danish, till Friday evening. Public Prosecutor Bala Nandhakumar claimed this was the first time a Maoist’s arrest was being registered in the Nilgiris.
Danish stated that he did not want to go into police custody. "I have rendered full co-operation to over 50 policemen from Kerala and Andhra, and answered all their questions. I have 10 cases against me and have received bail for all. The police are trying to jail me in spite of this, and levying false charges against me."
While being led away from the court, Danish shouted slogans calling for ‘Azadi’ in Kashmir, as well as raising anti-Hindutva and pro-Maoist slogans.
Danish's lawyer Raja said, "A total of three women and four men had crossed the borders. But Danish's name was not mentioned in the FIR at the beginning. The Supreme Court has ordered that only after proper evidence, the police can arrest an individual. The police are trying to trap Danish in spite of him having anticipatory bails in all the 10 cases against him."
