Coimbatore : Improper functioning of traffic signals near Government Polytechnic College and Manis School has disrupted the traffic and questioned the safety of the motorists.
With the City already grappling with traffic congestion, faulty traffic signals made the scene even worse in many parts of the city including the busy Government Polytechnic College junction on Wednesday.
Out of the 51 signals in the city, 23 signals are within the western traffic police limits and 28 in the eastern traffic police limits. Apart from these, with the help of private organizations, few signals with smart cameras have been installed in busy junctions like Lakshmi Mills on Avinashi road.
However, time and again, the city traffic police are struggling to maintain these signals which often go faulty.
In particular, the signal in front of Women's polytechnic college and the one near Manis school have been non-functional for the past few days. Hence, both these junctions are flooded with vehicles from all sides, leading to severe traffic congestion.
Despite the efforts of the traffic police to set right the chaos, the unruly vehicular movement puts the motorists at high risk and paves way for accidents. The traffic congestion at these junctions has in turn affected the traffic near Gandhipuram, Avinashi Road and other areas.
"As these two signals are close to schools, colleges and hospitals, the traffic goes wild during the busy hours. Noise pollution is the highest here, as two-wheelers, four-wheelers and buses continuously honk to ease through the traffic", opined a motorists who regularly uses the road.
Hence, the public have requested the city traffic police to immediately fix these two signals and ease the traffic.
While, the city police strongly urge the motorists to follow traffic rules and not to skip traffic signals, such contradicting scenarios where traffic signals in arterial junctions often go faulty, is quite an embarrassment for the traffic police department.
