Coimbatore: The Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) planned in Vellalore at a cost of Rs.178.88 crores is expected to see light after a long wait, Corporation Commissioner J.Sravan Kumar told reporters on Wednesday.
Coimbatore: The Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) planned in Vellalore at a cost of Rs.178.88 crores is expected to see light after a long wait, Corporation Commissioner J.Sravan Kumar told reporters on Wednesday.
He apprised that GO for the project is expected soon and the work will commence shortly.
The project may reach the implementation phase shortly, as Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami in the recent assembly session made an annoucement regarding the IBT at Vellalore.
Commenting on this, CCMC Commissioner, J Sravan Kumar said "The project will be implemented, as per the detailed project report submitted earlier, however with slight changes. As per the new plan, the IBT can accommodate 140 buses all at the same time. This project will be self sustainable, as revenue will be generated by accomodating commercial establishments in the terminal like restaurants, shops, advertisements besides basic amenities. The IBT will have facilities like escalators, skywalks, underpasses, and parking lots for the passengers."
Out of the total of 60 acres allotted for the IBT, the bus terminal would be built at 28 to 30 acres, considerably distanced from the main road. This would enable the terminal to have ample space in the entrance and to accomodate the proposed metro railway station in the future.
Once the State government releases the GO for the IBT, the proportion of funds to be released from the State Government and the Corporation's share would be released.
It may be recalled that the IBT project in Vellalore was announced five years ago by the State government and was kept pending, citing various reasons. Initially, the Corporation tried to implement the IBT project under Smart City Mission, however the project was not implemented after the project was passed on to the National Highways department using Central Government funding.
With the CM's recent announcement, it is speculated that the project would be kicked off anytime after the GO is passed.
