Coimbatore: Cattle rearers are delighted that the drought-stricken pastures in Coimbatore district have regained their cover after the monsoon rains which is good news for their cattle.
Coimbatore: Cattle rearers are delighted that the drought-stricken pastures in Coimbatore district have regained their cover after the monsoon rains which is good news for their cattle.
Livestock farming is predominant in the suburbs of Coimbatore district like Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Karamadai and in rural areas like Pallepalayam, Thekkampatti, Nellidurai, Tholampalayam and Velliyankadu. With cattle being unable to graze on the drought-stricken pastures in these areas, cattle rearers were left with no choice but to sell their cattle at low prices. Cattle rearers in Bedhikuttai, Sithankuttai, Damkadu and other areas reportedly crossed the Bhavani River without considering the risks involved, just to allow their cattle to graze.
Meanwhile, the recent south-west monsoon rains restored the green cover in Mettupalayam and the foothills of the Western Ghats in just two weeks. The grass in the pastures have reportedly sprung up now providing enough fodder for the cattle until next monsoon. Moreover, the price of livestock has increased after the monsoon, thus also increasing the market value of the livestock.
