Coimbatore: Demanding payment of their pending salaries of eight months, BSNL contract workers along with their families staged a dharna today near the Power House in Sivananda Colony.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) which provides various services to customers has about a lakh employees. For the past eight months, the contract workers had not been paid their salaries and hence the employees have repeatedly been emphasizing for immediate action to be taken regarding the same.
Addressing the media, the protesters said "Over 7,000 contract workers are employed in BSNL, Tamil Nadu of which 442 contract workers are in Coimbatore. While BSNL claims to pay them well, they actually get only Rs. 7,000 to Rs.10,000 as salary through the contractor. Even this salary amount has not been paid to them for the past eight months."
The protesters lamented that this had affected their livelihood and hence demanded immediate action. They warned of engaging in a huge protest along with trade unions if BSNL fails to take necessary action. They also slammed the Government for failing to implement 4G services to the customers which will yield profit, but instead was trying to privatize it. "In case the Government fails to take necessary action, we will intensify our protests," said the irate protesters.
