Coimbatore: It is estimated that if River Cauvery has to flourish like it did 50 years ago, approximately 242 crore trees need to be planted on its shores in the next 12 years.

Taking the first step toward the goal, the fieldwork of planting 73 crore saplings is to be commenced soon, on behalf of the Isha Foundation. In an attempt to conserve River Cauvery which is the lifeline of people in South India, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, the founder of Isha Foundation has launched a campaign named 'Cauvery Calling,' recently.
The project is designed to restore Cauvery River, its ecosystem, aid its perennial flow and to increase the income of the average farmers by 5 to 8 times, mostly through Agroforestry, according to the Head of Forestry, Forest College and Research Institute.
Sellamuthu, the President of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has rendered his support to the 'Cauvery Calling' campaign. While addressing the media at the Coimbatore Press Club, Sellamuthu said, " Planting and growing crores of plants will save River Cauvery, nature and farmers. All the farmers should come forward to participate in this initiative and grow trees which will conserve rain, soil resources and the economy."
Partiban, Head of Forestry, Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam stated that trees play a vital role in conserving water and soil resources, and the Agroforestry scheme will actually benefit 18 districts in Tamil Nadu and nine states in Karnataka. He also requested all the farmers to come forward and plant trees in their farmlands. He added that plans were afoot to create multi-purpose agroforestry and plant trees, according to the soil type.
Partiban also highlighted that nurturing these trees would increase agricultural productivity and triple the income of the farmers. He noted that 25 varieties of trees like Malaivembu, Kumil and Mahakani which have short life span, Timber varieties and Oil seeds which have an average life span, trees like Teak, Sandalwood and Rosewood which have longer life span can provide additional income to the farmers. He added that these trees can be grown amidst the regular crops.
