Crops in the agricultural belt at the foot of the Mettupalayam mountain range like Tholampalayam, Thekkampatti, Nellithurai, Velliyangadu, Lingapuram and other places have been destroyed by wildlife, every year. Farmers claim that while wild elephants destroy crops like plantain and palm, crops like corn and broad beans are destroyed by deer, peacocks and wild pigs. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association felt the need to protest demanding necessary steps to prevent the destruction of crops.
Led by Rangasamy, President of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, the protesters raised slogans demanding amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act and to restrict the entry of wild animals like elephants, wild boars and peacocks that damage crops.
Meanwhile, the number of wild elephants in the Gudalur and Nayakanpalayam areas has been on the rise and caused distress to farmers. The protesters condemned the Government's announcement on Gudalur and Nayakanpalayam as an 'elephant habitat' and demanded for the same to be withdrawn immediately. Over 100 individuals, including women, took part in the protest.
