Tirupur: Owing to the ongoing protest of farmers against the Government's decision to set up high tension power towers across agricultural lands, a large number of farmers boycotted the monthly Farmers Grievance Meeting held at the District Collectorate in Tirupur office.

In the past few days, police have arrested farmers for protesting against the Government's decision on setting up high tension power towers in the agricultural lands across Tirupur and Palladam. The issue has been escalated to the district administration many times but with no action initiated yet.

Condemning the indifference of the district administration regarding this issue, farmers held a protest last week in which the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Gunasekaran passed derogatory remarks about how free electricity was being provided to farmers and reportedly misbehaved with women protesters too. A petition was filed regarding the same, and yet no action had been taken.

Meanwhile, the monthly Farmers Grievances Meeting was held today at the Tirupur District Collectorate, chaired by the District Collector Palanisamy. Usually, about 100 to 150 farmers from various parts of the district attend the meeting and present their grievances to the district administration. However, today, many farmers boycotted the meeting.

The district administration has now decide to hold a peace talk with the farmers this afternoon, and also ordered action with regard to the complaint lodged against the Additional Superintendent of Police.
