The property tax has been hiked by 50 percent for residential buildings and 100 percent for rental and non-residential buildings in Coimbatore Corporation. Also, the Suez company has been granted permission to supply drinking water for the next 26 years. In opposition to these decisions, DMK cadres protested in front of the South Taluk Office in Coimbatore, led by the Singanallur MLA N Karthik.
The protesters raised slogans against the property tax hike and the Suez water scheme. They claimed that unlike any other Government in the past, the present Government had increased property tax by 100 percent contrary to the promise made in the Legislative Assembly that the property tax hike would be reduced.
Protesters demanded the withdrawal of the property tax hike since it would be a huge burden for the public. They felt that the public would also suffer due to the Suez water scheme.
