The trade unions had condemned the Centre's decision and declared a nationwide strike from August 20 for a month. The strike was on for five days, which included a two-day hunger strike.
Meanwhile, the Union Federation executives held talks with the Secretary of the Defence Logistics Manufacturing Department, after which it was decided to postpone the strike temporarily and the protesters resumed work.
Following this, DMK, Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi and other parties conducted a consultation meeting. It was decided that if the Central Govt did not change its decision, there would be a massive protest involving all the people in Nilgiris District.
The Central Government has decided to hand over 41 Defense Equipment Manufacturing factories in India including the Aravankadu Cordite Factory in Nilgiris to the private sector.
