The Nilgiris: Billicombai villagers laid siege to the District Collector's office in Ooty demanding closure of the liquor shop functioning in their village.
The villagers reportedly had petitioned the District Collector thrice in the past three weeks demanding the closure of the liquor shop. The District administration had promised to have the shop closed within a week but had failed to do so. This irked the villagers and led them to protest by laying siege to the District Collectorate.
The protesters stated that in a village with over 2000 families residing, drunken men strew empty liquor bottles around, verbally abuse school-going students and tease women tea-estate workers when they return home in the evening.
After the police intervened and negotiated with the protesting villagers, the protest was called off. But, the protesters reiterated that if the liquor shop was not shut down permanently, then they would be forced to resort to a road roko to ensure necessary action is taken.
