Reiterating the need for funds for rural water supply in Tamil Nadu, the Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development, Urban and Rural Water Supply (TWAD) and Implementation of Special Programme, S P Velumani spoke at the State Minister's conference on Jal Jeevan Mission, seeking financial support to provide tap connections to 96 lakh rural households by 2024.
Reiterating the need for funds for rural water supply in Tamil Nadu, the Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development, Urban and Rural Water Supply (TWAD) and Implementation of Special Programme, S P Velumani spoke at the State Minister's conference on Jal Jeevan Mission, seeking financial support to provide tap connections to 96 lakh rural households by 2024.
The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water to rural areas by 2024 by the Jal Sakthi Ministry.
The Tamil Nadu Government provides piped water to 99.11 percent of rural areas and the per capita supply for village panchayats is 55 litres as per norms. “The provision of 100 percent household tap connections is possible only if the supply is enhanced to 70 lpcd (litre per capita per day). To achieve this, additional sources of water, strengthening of the existing major water supply schemes and distributions systems, including laying of pipelines involving a cost of Rs. 47.820 crores is necessary,” said S P Velumani, seeking the ministry’s financial support to Tamil Nadu.
"The State Government implements 548 combined water supply schemes through the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) and 1.14 lakh individual power pump schemes and associated distributed systems to supply water in 79,394 rural habitations. Only 20 percent of the households were provided with tap connections due to non-availability of adequate sources of water. Hence, I request the Minister to liberally support Tamil Nadu with funds to take up water supply projects for a better quality of life for the people in the State," urged the Minister.
