Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City and Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has geared up the work of constructing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre at Ondipudur which is being built at an estimated cost of Rs. 37 lakhs.
The action comes after repeated complaints of stray dog menace that was gripped the city. And, the previous ABC centre shut down due to public opposition.
The newly-built facility would be similar to CCMC's abandoned ABC centre which was functioning at Ukkadam, two years ago. It may be recalled that the ABC Centre in Ukkadam was closed following stiff opposition from the residents.
After the closure of the centre, the stray dog menace grew multifold in the city and CCMC was put under constant criticism for turning blind towards the issue.
Following which, CCMC earmarked a place at Ondipudur here for building a new ABC centre at a cost of Rs. 38 lakhs. According to official sources, the new centre would be inaugurated before September, 2019.
Earlier, Ukkadam's ABC centre was used by People for Animals (PFA) Unit-II, an animal welfare organisation carrying out sterilisation for stray dogs of 80 wards of the CCMC. And, the remaining wards were handled by Humane Animal Society (HAS), another animal welfare organisation operating at Seranaickenpalayam, here.
After the ABC centre at Ukkadam was shut down, the sterilisation work carried out by PFA Unit-II members completely stalled, thus resulting in uncontrolled stray dog population.
However, the CCMC is yet to announce which of the two organisations (HAS or PFA) would be permitted to use the newly built ABC centre at Ondipudur.
