Coimbatore: For the first time, as many as 65 houses in the tribal hamlets of Kondanur Pudur and Kondanur in the Anaikatti hills would be fitted with individual toilets, a long pending demand of the hamlet dwellers here.
Coimbatore: For the first time, as many as 65 houses in the tribal hamlets of Kondanur Pudur and Kondanur in the Anaikatti hills would be fitted with individual toilets, a long pending demand of the hamlet dwellers here.
While the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) had allotted individual toilets to these households through the Swachh Bharath Mission of the Central Government, the Inner Wheel Club of Coimbatore North (IWCCN) has come forward to offer a sum of Rs. 5000 to each beneficiary.
The beneficiaries were earlier allotted a sum of Rs.12,000 each by DRDA for the construction of toilets. DRDA had sought the help of sponsors to complete the project as the sum offered by them was insufficient.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday in the presence of IWCCN members and DRDA officials for the project. The constructions would begin on Monday, the officials said.
IWCCN had earlier sponsored individual toilets in the Kandivazhi tribal hamlet.
“We have planned to tile the floors and walls of the toilet to keep the toilets clean", said Gomathi Viswanathan, Past President of IWCCN.
Meanwhile, the residents have expressed that the new toilets would not only eradicate open defecation but also address the ongoing human-elephant conflicts to a large extent.
