Coimbatore: Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the RSS laid siege to a private school which functioned today on Krishna Jayanthi which had been declared as a public holiday by the Government.

The Tamil Nadu Government had declared a public holiday for schools, colleges and institutions to mark the Gokulashtami festival that is being celebrated across the country. Despite the declared public holiday, Carewell Matriculation School in Mettupalayam continued to function as usual.
Students of classes 10-12 attended special classes today at the school. On hearing this, the ABVP Student Association laid siege to the school and argued with the teachers for conducting classes on a public holiday. It has been found that the school was functioning on a holiday without the permission of the Education Department.
The ABVP Student Association reportedly issued a warning to the school and also complained to the Education Department regarding the school. Thereafter, the school declared a half-day holiday after lunch and sent the students back home. Senthil, a member of the ABVP Students Association opined, "It is illegal to conduct classes on a public holiday. This has been continuously done in many schools in Mettupalayam. The Education Department should take strict action against such schools," he reiterated.
