With Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, over 5000 idols were to be taken in procession across Coimbatore district on behalf of Hindu organisations. The city police have made extensive security arrangements for these processions.
With the IB warning of a terrorist attack plot that has been unearthed on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi similar to the Easter Sunday bomb blasts in Sri Lanka earlier this year, Coimbatore is on high alert. It is reported that six terrorists from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh have entered Tamil Nadu, with Coimbatore likely to be their main target.
Following the alert, the police have been diligently checking all vehicles from Mettupalayam headed toward Coimbatore. The vehicles are allowed entry into the city only after thorough inspection. Vehicles from Mettupalayam heading toward Nilgiris are also being checked at the river bridge.
Based on the information about the suspected terrorist vehicles, a team led by the West Zone IG Periaiah, Asst. IG Karthikeyan, SP Sujith Kumar, Additional SP (Naxal Dept) Mohan Nivas are also leading intensified vehicle checks across the city. Over 500 policemen and sniffer dogs have been deployed to beef up security in the city.
Nine areas in Tirupur Corporation, 22 places in the District's rural areas, 31 places in Tirupur are also being subjected to intense vehicle inspections.
