Gandhi (72), a retired Government employee who has been a tenant in Vaidyanathan's house in Kuniamuthur for the past five years, heard some noise late Wednesday night and noticed a 10-member gang cutting off the sandalwood tree with a machine axe in the front yard of the house.
Though he raised an alarm, the gang fled the spot with the sandalwood tree which had been axed. Gandhi immediately lodged a formal complaint to the Kuniamuthur police who have registered a case and are investigating.
A special police team has been formed to nab the 10 sandalwood smugglers, keeping in mind that such frequent incidents of sandalwood smuggling are being reported in the city of late.
