According to Police, a special patrol vehicle is assigned to prevent sand mining in the areas along the Western Ghats in the district.
Over the past few years, sand smuggling has been on the rise in various parts abutting the Western Ghats including Thondamuthur, Alanthurai, Karunya University and pockets along river Noyyal.
The sand smugglers operate on the wee hours of the night using donkey and bullock cart and smuggle sand. The irate public has seized the vehicles indulging in sand mining in the past.
According to Sujith Kumar “The sand mining prevention vehicle would be operated exclusively for monitoring sand mining The team and the vehicle would be used is to intensify arrests of criminals with the help of informants in suspected areas.
“The vehicle will be active from 8 pm to 8 am. The culprits arrested for sand mining will be put behind bars under the Goonda Act”.
The police also claimed that incidents of sand smuggling have come down since the special vehicle is deployed to patrol in the areas.
