Coimbatore : Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme SP Velumani kick started the desilting of the Karayampalayam pond near Sulur on Wednesday.
While addressing the press after the inauguration, Minister SP Velumani said, "In a bid to improve the livelihood of the farmers, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced several schemes. As per Article 110 passed in the assembly on July 20, the small irrigation ponds in all villages across Tamil Nadu will be desilted to increase the storage capacity. Around 5000 small irrigation tanks will be desilted in a budget of 5 lakhs each and 25,000 ponds and streams will be desilted in a budget of 1 lakh each."
"Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 5000 tanks in all districts will be desilted at a budget of Rs. 5 lakhs each, 25,000 ponds in a budget of 2 lakhs each, structures at the inflow and outflow points and to build compound walls in a budget of Rs. 750 crores. The total budget of the desilting project will be done at Rs. 1250 crores", the Minister added.
The Minister added that "In the first phase, three small irrigation ponds and 210 small irrigation lakes will be desilted in a budget of 225 lakhs in the district of Coimbatore. To enhance the water sources for the betterment of agriculture, 1829 projects will be implemented across Tamil Nadu in a budget of Rs. 499.68 crores under the Kudimaramathu scheme. A GO has been issued to carry out 45 projects ina budget of Rs. 7.43 crores in Coimbatore. The government has allowed the execution of the projects through various registered irrigation associations."
Under this project, de-weeding, desilting canals, repairing sluices, repairing shutters, strengthening of the bunds will be carried out. Participatory Irrigation farmers are requested to contribute 10% of the project cost through labour or cash for completion of the project, the Minister noted.
Minister SP Velumani further added that people should use the water from canal wisely and uplift their livelihood and also help by setting up rainwater harvesting during the monsoons which will help increase the groundwater table and enable them to use water during the rest of the year.
