Coimbatore : A review meeting was held by Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme SP Velumani with all the Departmental heads of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj office.
In the meeting, the Minister ordered all the rural development and panchayat offices to install rainwater harvesting systems (RWH) in the buildings within a month. He also said the details about the implementation should be submitted to their head office and that he would personally inspect the RWH systems installed.
He further added that all the buildings including commercial buildings, complexes, industries, apartments, schools, colleges, private housing colonies, farmhouses, marriage halls, theatres, corporate offices, hostels, hotels, restaurants must be installed with RWH system. He also noted that public places and streets which are highly prone to waterlogging during rainy season should have a RWH system.
He instructed that the RWH systems in the buildings near water resources should direct the rainwater directly to the water sources and insisted that the proportion of the RWH system must be proportionate to the property size.
He instructed the officials to take all measures to install RWH systems in 70,368 water sources including tanks, ponds and lakes under control of the Rural Development and panchayat raj department.
He also instructed to maintain the 50,767 de-silted water sources between 2011 to 2015 in a budget of Rs. 2,200 cores and 16,508 water resources de-slited between 2018-2018 in a budget of Rs. 877 crores under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
He reviewed the status of 1201 small irrigation lakes which were de-silted at a budget of Rs. 226 crores in 2016-17 under Tamil Nadu Village Habitations Improvement (THAI) Scheme.
He noted that 22,347 check dams were built in a span of two years in a budget of Rs. 485 crores. The Minister also opined that the check dams helped to route and save rain water during the recent rains.
He instructed the officials to speed the projects announced by the CM in the assembly on July 10 to save water in the rural areas and channelise it for irrigation and increase the groundwater tables by constructing 10,000 check dams using labourers under MGNREGS at a budget of Rs. 312 crores.
The Minister instructed the officials to complete the de-silting, repairing sluices and strengthening of the barrages in 5000 small irrigation lakes, 25,000 ponds in a budget of 500 crores and the project in a budget of 750 crores under MGNREGS before September 2019.
Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj K. Bhaskaran IAS, Additional Directors, Execution Directors and Executive Engineers other higher officials were present in the meeting.
