Coimbatore : The 17th Annual National Conference of the Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSICON - 2019) is to be held in the city commencing from Saturday
More than 500 medical practitioners, and doctors hailing from various parts of India would be attending the three- day conference on Diabetes Foot. The conference which is being organised for the 17th successful year is also to witness 16 demonstrative surgeries. While the inauguration and sessions would be held at the Le-Meridian Hotel in the outskirts of the city, live demonstrations are to be telecast through video conferencing from Ganga Hospital
Briefing media persons here at the Ganga Hospital on Wednesday, S. Raja Sababathy, Ganga Hospital Director and Organizing Chairman of the National Conference said that “the main aim of the conference was to prevent foot ulcer, which leads to amputation of the legs”.
“Foot ulcers are a leading cause of disability among diabetic patients. Out of 100 people with diabetes, 15 would develop some sort of foot ulcer and in worse cases lose a leg. Hence it is very important to prevent and treat it at the earliest,” Dr. Rajasabapathy noted.
He claimed that despite being a threatening issue, the treatment for the same has not been advanced so far in many regions and would often be restricted to cleaning and dressing of wounds.
“We are planning to discuss the advancement in treatment by showing live surgical workshops at the Ganga Hospital. Other technical aspects including foot pressure measurements, choosing the right footwear and various other treatments would be discussed also,” he said.
“At a time when diabetes is growing at epidemic proportions in India with more than 11 % of the population expected to be affected by it in 2045, it was important that such conferences are organised with the utmost care to create awareness to the public and to offer better treatment for those affected with foot ulcers” said Dr. Rajasabapathy, Head of Plastic and Microsurgery of Ganga Hospital.
