Coimbatore: Larsen & Turbo, India's leading engineering, technology and construction conglomerate has upgraded infrastructure at 12 Government schools in Coimbatore.
The District Collector, K Rajamani, handed over the infrastructural facilities created by L&T to the Tamil Nadu State Education Department at a function held in the Government Higher Secondary School, Asokapuram in the presence of MLA V C Arukutty, R Murugan, Chief Education Officer, Coimbatore, other Education Department officials, Headmasters of Government schools, members of the School Management Committee, PTA and officials of L&T.
Being a committed, responsible corporate citizen and supporting a wide range of social causes including education, Larsen & Turbo has been carrying out year-long initiatives at multiple locations across India to enhance the quality of education at Government-run schools.
Under this initiative, L&T has created sanitation facilities such as newly-constructed washrooms, hand wash arrangements and provision for portable drinking water at eight Government schools in Asokapuram, Vellalore, Pichanur, Chettipalayam, Arivolinagar, Kumittipathi, Kurumbapalayam and Anaikatti. L&T has also set up Mini-Science Centres at four schools in Malumichampatti, Pichanur, Vellalore and Anaikatti, constructed a compound wall at one school, renovated classrooms in four schools in Asokapuram,Vellalapalayam, Myleripalayam and Anaikatti) and also renovated the Science Lab in a tribal residential school at Anaikatti.
Dignitaries at the function also witnessed the planting of 500 saplings at GHSS, Asokapuram Campus by students as part of an afforestation measure, adopting the Miyawaki method which is the first-of-its-kind initiative at a Government school in Coimbatore.
L&T has also agreed with the Tamil Nadu State Education Department to establish water and sanitation facilities in four more Government schools in Coimbatore, during the current financial year. The School Adoption Project (SAP) to facilitate holistic development of Government schools in Coimbatore is a key initiative under the aegis of L&T's CSR efforts, since 2014. 12 Government schools in Coimbatore have thus far benefited from this program. The principal objective of L&T's School Adoption Project is to complement the efforts of the State Education Department in the form of strengthening primary and secondary facilities at Government schools. These include setting up of classrooms, Smart Class, laboratories, washrooms, hand wash areas, compound walls, sports facilities etc., also inducing behavioural change among children through communication, conducting special education programs to improve the quality of education and ensuring child rights as per UNCRC.
The 'Special Education' programs include imparting science, math and linguistic skills, providing career guidance, life skill education, health and hygiene awareness programs, strengthening of PTAs, etc. These changes have not only benefited children studying at these schools but have also enhanced the attendance levels at Coimbatore Government Schools.
Since 2014, L&T has also been implementing the WATSAN (Water & Sanitation) Project in Government-run schools. This project undertakes construction/refurbishment of washrooms, hand wash facilities, water sumps, installation of water purifiers as well as provision of dustbins with stands and the conduction of health education programs. Thus far, 21 Government schools in Coimbatore have been covered under L&T's WATSAN project.
