Coimbatore: Private water tanker owners across Tamil Nadu are on an indefinite strike demanding that the Government ought to provide proper licenses for their lorries.

Private water tanker owners in Coimbatore too have joined the indefinite strike stating, "Out of 25,000 water tankers plying in the State, 3000 water tankers are from Coimbatore and so we too will join the indefinite strike from today. This will create water scarcity in educational institutions, hospitals and hotels," they added. One of the demands voiced at the strike was for the Tamil Nadu Government to invite the water tanker owners for talks.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Private Water Tanker Lorry Owners’ Association had warned that they would go on an indefinite statewide strike starting August 21, if the Government does not resolve their issues. The Association’s President N Nijalingam stated that the strike was called due to the police who had begun filing cases of theft under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code against truck drivers, cleaners and owners. “About 20 such cases had been booked thus far across the State. Near Pallikaranai four days ago, lorries were seized and a case was registered. Because of this, we are unable to get drivers for the lorries and since owners are also being booked, we do not know what else to do," added N Nijalingam.
