Coimbatore: The Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, S P Velumani held a review meeting with officials to discuss the status of various Smart City projects across 11 Corporations in Chennai. The progress of these Smart City projects were reviewed at the meeting.

The progress of these Smart City projects were reviewed at the meeting.
Cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Salem, Vellore, Tirupur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Trichy and Erode have been selected for implementing Smart City projects. Each district has been allotted funds of Rs.500 crores each. The Tamil Nadu Government has also equally contributed Rs.500 crores on par with the Centre. The Central Government has approved 357 projects worth Rs.10,440 crores across the 11 cities in Tamil Nadu.
Amongst the approved 357 projects, 57 projects have been completed with a budget of Rs. 240 crores, 184 projects with a budget of Rs.5,340 crores are ongoing, 10 projects with a budget of Rs. 575 crores is at the issue of tender phase and 18 projects with a budget of Rs. 439 crores has received tender contract notice. Apart from these, 15 projects are in the preparatory phase for issuing a tender and an elaborate execution plan has been prepared for five projects with a budget of Rs. 728 crores and an execution plan is being prepared for 68 projects with a budget of Rs.2493 crores.
Tamil Nadu holds the seventh position with 120.72 points compared to all the 36 states and Union Territories. Minister S P Velumani reviewed the project status in-depth by reviewing every Corporation and Municipality. He also specified that there ought to be quick completion of projects within the allotted time and ordered authorities to call for tenders for the required projects before September 30.
The Minister also ordered for a detailed execution plan to be prepared for ongoing projects and have them ready for tenders before October 1. He instructed the higher authorities to closely inspect the proceedings and asked them to bring to his notice any difficulty in the execution of the projects to the immediate notice of concerned Development Heads. He also reminded that every project should be completed within five years of its announcement and advised authorities to work toward achieving this time frame.
The Principal Secretary to the Government, Harmander Singh, the Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, K Bhaskaran, the Special Secretary to the Government, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department,T N Hariharan, the Director of Town Panchayat S. Palanisamy, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply Department Director Dr. C N Maheshwaran, Corporation Commissioners, Engineers, Superintendent Engineers, Municipality Commissioners and other higher officials were present at the review meeting.
